Just had a local repair shop replace the trim motor on my 1986 115 yamaha last year. Worked fine until end of season and started to act up. Trim motor runs but sounds like it is running dry. Motor will start to trim up and stops. Will trim back down but will not raise more that a few inches before it stops going up.

Checked fluid and is full. You can hear the fluid running in the pump when you first hit the trim motor and then you can hear it stop pushing fluid and the engine stops trimming up.

Any ideas of what to look for?

inspect the manual relese valve and oring assy.
how did you check the fluid level? the engine must be in the full up position to check it.

Re: 1986 Yamaha 115 tilt/trim

I checked it in the down position. Manual release seems ok. The beginning of the problem started when I raised the engine to the full position and it would not come down - again sounded like the pump was turing with no fluid in it - had to use the manual release to get it back down. Problem got worse and eventully the engine would not trim or tilt up. If you rock the engine back and forth you can hear fluid going in and out of the pump while it is running for a second but will not raise the motor.
