Re: 1987 115 hp mercury surges at 1600 rpms

I have a 1984 inline 6 115 and am having the same problem. I was told it is probably the fuel pump or maybe a link and sync issue. I ordered the rebuild kit for the fuel pump and plan on fixing it myself next week. It looks real easy. The one way to trouble shoot a pump issue is to have someone squeeze the primer bulb when you experience the surging problem. If this helps it is the fuel pump. I have the manual and can copy the instructions and diagrams for your motor if you like. Rebuild kits cost $10. The link and sync issue might be more than I care to handle but if rebuilding the pump doesn't work I may have to.

My '88 Merc 115 inline 6 did that until I had the carbs rebuilt. My friend and I did the first rebuild but we had a bit of the same problem. Then I had an outboard mechanic rebuild the carbs and he said he had to use the fine wire from an unwrapped cable to clean out the small jets inside the carbs. Ran perfect after that.
