TODAY I LOOKED AT A BOAT WITH A 1987 150 BLACK MAX ON IT. IM NOT SURE OF THE HOURS, OR IF IT WAS REBUILT OR NOT. THIS WAS THE FIRST START UP SINCE BEING WINTERIZED, OTHER THAN A COMPRESSION CHECK.
THE MOTOR FIRED RIGHT OFF, THE TELL TALE WAS A LITTLE SLOW IN COMING BUT EVENTUALLY DID. IT SEEMED TO IDLE WELL. ONE THING I DID NOTICE WAS EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE FOR THE FIRST FEW MINUTES A PUFF WHITE SMOKE WOULD EXIT THE EXHAUST, COULD THIS BE WATER IN THE CYLINDERS? OR NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT?

Re: 1987 150 BLACK MAX QUESTIONS

Its normal for the tell tail to waite a few minuyes to start up, it takes a while for the thurmostats to open. As to the puff of smoke, it probably is just cleaning itself out from being stored for the winter. Absolutly take this boat out before you buy it, and make sure is runs good and smooth, also make sure you do or have done a compression check,. there should be no more than a 10% spread btween cylinders. My 87 150 has 120# per cylinder, it should come in around there. Pull the lower unit plug just enough to let a little oil out and make sure it is not milky, it should look like fresh oil! Get all the records he has.

Hope it works out for ya :D

Re: 1987 150 BLACK MAX QUESTIONS

THANKS LUBEDUDE,
I DID A COMP. TEST, 1:98, 2:102, 3:100, 4:100, 5:111, 6:100.
THE L/U LUBE LOOKED CLEAN, SLIGHT SWIRL TO IT BUT MOSTLY CLEAN.
MOTOR SEEMED TO IDLE FINE. REVVED UP NICELY AND SHIFTED SMOOTHLEY. IM GOING TO SEA TRIAL IT IN A COUPLE OF DAYS. WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR FOR MAX RPM?
DO THESE COMP #S SEEM OK, LOW, OR WHAT? IF I BET IT SHOULD I DECARB. OR SHOULD I WAIT TIL I HAVE A NOTICEABL PERFORMANCE DROP?

Yes, they do seem low, but what Im looking at is that they are pretty even, I would do a decarb, you may have to do it several times with a comp reading in between to see if your helping at all, dont waite. Max RPM should be in the 5500-6000 range
