Hi All,

New guy here...

Engine is having trouble holding idle speed. Sneezes and quits. It will start without any problems as long as I do my normal choking routine. It will also start fine when warm without choking it.

Will run and Cruise once it gets going, but will lose RPM's intermittently & and then increase RPM's again. Sounds like it cuts in and out. It will also frequently stall out when trying to shift into gear - I find myself having to goose the throttle so it will not stall. This is not a solution, and I do not want to cause irreparable harm. The engine has been great and has been running great all year until 2 weeks ago when I added 40 gallons of fuel and also added two bottles of Ring Free - It seems to me that is when things started turning bad.

After running it for a few weekends, I decided to "Troubleshoot" I removed Fuel water separator, and dumped into Jar - 90% Gas 10% watery crud. I replaced and ran for a few hours - removed and inspected contents - 100% pure fuel - I do not think that this is it.

I replaced plugs - no change in Performance.

I added 35 Gallons of fuel (this time w/o Ring Free) and still no change in Performance.

2 years ago, had a Carb cleaning done by the Shop, and it solved similar problem - I suspect that I have dirty carbs -

I will be taking it to the Mechanic at this point - Any input from the Forum experts?

Thanks!!!

It sounds like you are due for a carb cleaning. It is also time to replace the fuel pumps.

Take out the float bowl drains and pump gas with the bulb, one chamber at a time, you may be able to expell the water, but boat on tilt and pump out the tank at the lowest point, if you cannot do this, get some fuel conditioner which supposedly zaps the water and put a big dose in the tank. Good Luck,

Hi Rob. Just curious, is it Rob Allen after the Rob Allen Spearguns or just a coincidence? Take care!

Hi Gang,

Engine is fixed now - Mechanics report is that the carbs were really not that dirty - he cleaned the bowls ----- but .... the screws that adjust the jets to regulate air into the carbs were worn out- apparently had been tighted down too much over the years and could not go any further - The boat is running fine now...

Does that make sense to you experts out there???

Thanks for all of your help -

Rob

"The engine has been great and has been running great all year until 2 weeks ago when I added 40 gallons of fuel and also added two bottles of Ring Free - It seems to me that is when things started turning bad."

Aren't you supposed to put in 1 oz per 10 gallons? I know you found your problem, but I was wondering why you put so muc in - my Yam tech told me to avoid too much ring-free.

Swist,

Hindsight is 20/20 - will not be overloading on Ring free again - While we found the "problem" - I cannot help but think that this Ring Free overdose did something to trigger something - The boat & Motor are both 17 years old - so I do expect things to crop up every so often -

At least by having the engine in the shop - timing was reset - Carbs received a cleaning - Problem is solved - and we can get back to some fishing...

Rob
