1987 15hp johnson rewind starter

when i pull the rope after tear apart and reinstall their is not enough tension to in the spring to retrieve it, Is their a certain number of counter clockwise rotations I can make to correct this. The manual has me confused. Thanks in advance

I suggest 2 to 4 turns.
Also, take into account the rope will stretch a little and find its seat with use; may be up to another 2" tail.

When I re-install them, I remove the air silencer and turn the unit until the starter is right up against the front of the motor where the rope exits the motor. I then hold the unit tight and pull on the pully (creating tension) to bring it back to where it mounts on the motor. This amount of tension should ensure the rope handle ends up tight against the motor and as you pull it for starting, more tension is created to ensure a good rewind.

If this doesn't work then ensure the outer end of the spring is still sticking out of the groove in the cup. If that spring end goes through the groove, into the cup, it will not work.

What exactly is confusing you? Is it the OEM manual?

is the tab on the bottom of the cup getting into the retainer hole on the block?
