Haveing cooling issues. Wter is coming from pee hole fine. Took off the cover and took out the stat. Started it to make sure water was coming to the stat,it is. How much water should be coming to where the stat sits? Left the stat out and i let it run for a whille 1/4 to 1/2 throttle. Noticed water was coming from the top hole on the middle unit, exhaust hole. But there was also what looked like steam color smoke coming from it, is that normal? If anyone can help me get this thing cooling right please do. John 507-330-4739

Have you checked or replaced the impeller.Be sure the intake is clear. And if there is a tell tale check for a mud daubers nest.If it is fresh water and not much indication of excessive corrosion the system is probably clear unless pieces of impeller have plugged something. You can check the thermostat by putting in water and heating it up.

Re: 1987 15hp Rude

I have a '75 15hp w/no pee hole. When I start it, the exhaust port in the middle jhas nothing coming out, when it warms after about 45 seconds, water and steam spray out of it, confirming that the thermostat is now open, and water is circulating normally. Yours sounds fine. let it warm up, and if you can touch your fingers on the head for a few seconds w/o getting burned, you're good to go. If you splash a bit of water on the head, and it vaporizes, shut your motor off immediately and find the water blockage! If you've got water coming out the pee hole, and the hole in the back of the leg after it warms up, you're likely all good. You can also run it at the slowest idle possible and make sure water is still misting out of that leg hole and pee hole. If it stops at really slow idle, you likely have a worn impeller that needs replacing. Good luck!

Mist or steam? If steam it will burn your hand, so very carefully put your hand up to it and be ready to move it quickly. I'm thinking probably mist. The other thing that is a common problem is not enough water in the barrel. Make sure the water is well up the leg. Best of luck. Rick.

KBAIT, my 1975 does exactly like yours, and the mist can get pretty hot, but does not burn. Amen to a full barrel Rick.
