1987 15hp

Having an issue with my motor running hot.It is a 1987 15hp rude. As i was going across the lake i could tell it was losing power. There was a steady stream of water coming from thr pee hole. Once i got to shore there was a bunch of steam coming from the hole towards the top of the drive unit, exhaust. Could this mean the thermostat is not working? The motor was hot, it sizzeled when water got on it when i took the cover off. Thanks

Quite possible, the telltale hole is before the stat. You could try removing it temporarily and run it without the stat, 3 bolts at the back, top of the head. Another test is to put the stat in boiling water (pot) and suspend it using a spoon, should open around 140 F, use a baking thermo to measure temp, watch it to see if it opens. Was or has this been a salt water motor?

just remove the tstat flush the motor out, and replace the tstat. yours is easy to change, just 3 bolts and the triangular cover above the top plug. but you need to find out if you have an early or late production motor, they have different tstats.
