Hi all,
I have a 1987 4hp Evinrude Deluxe kicker. When winterizing i noticed it was running hot and there was very little water coming out of the telltale. I put a new water pump in this engine this spring. I disassembled lower unit and pump is in excellent condition and tube to pwergead is not clogged. does this engine have a thermostat and does anyone have any ideas why this engine would overheat with a good waterpump?
Thanks in advance,
Bob

No thermostat shown for this engine and there is no separate pee hole either so presumablty you are just looking at the water coming out via the exhaust relief on the leg.

While you had the lower unit off did you connect a water supply to the bottom of the water tube to confirm a good flow through the engine? Try that.

Water passages in the head could be blocked but if you cannot get a good flow through it the first thing I would look at is the grommet at the top of the water tube. Corrosion around this where it is located in the flange of the inner exhaust tube (the deluxe is the same up here as 6 & 8hp models) squeezes it closed over the top of the tube and cuts off the water flow.

If you poke a stout wire up the tube and it hits something hard and solid it's probably OK but if it hits something rubbery at the top then that's the trouble!
