I have a 1987 8hp Johnson that has a sticker on it that says to mix 100:1. A couple people told me to mix it 50:1. What do you guys think? I am thinking that you would have better lubrication with the 50:1 mix but it would smoke a little more. The guy I bought it off of was mixing it 100:1. Thanks.

Re: 1987 8hp johnson fuel mix

OMC found out that although the 100:1 mix provided adequate lubrication for running the motor, it was so oil-lean that there wasn't enough of an oil film/residue left to protect the bearing surfaces from rust, when the motor was in storage. So, they issued an advisory to go back to the 50:1 mix.

You'd be doing yourself and any potential future owner a big favor by removing the 100:1 decal (if present); a bit of heat from a hair dryer should soften it up enough, if it won't peel off try a bit of carb cleaner spray or other suitable solvent.

The internal bearing oil preventaive was the story the factory said in print, but a company employee at the time, verbally told a mechanic different. With internally mounted fuel tanks, it was hard for the boater to mix the proper amount, unless they fueled the tank up completely every time. Thereby the 100-1 may have even been less. So the factory did a CYA. For the 6 gallon tanks, that was lesser of a problem.

This was probably what spawned of the VRO oil injection.
