Maybe someone can help. The motor has the cd2 ignition. What are the purposes of these componenents:

1. stator assembly it has 2 coils

2. sensor (under flywheel) timing?

3. coil and lamination assembly near flywheel

4.ignition coil assembly (hooks to spark plugs) raises the voltage for spark right?

One of my coils on the stator assembly has wires broke. The replacement part says 4 amp, which is the charging current I believe. Is this for ignition or charging the battery?

Thanks
Mike

Re: 1987 9.9 electrical questions

The stator assembly comprises the coils that generate the power for battery charging etc. I guess there are three yellow wires (one with a blue and one with grey tracer) which lead to a terminal block to which is also connected the rectifier (you missed that out) that converts the AC from the stator to DC for the battery. The red wire is the DC positive. The rectifier case is the negative and is of course grounded.

The coil and lamination assembly, also under the flywheel surely, is the coil that generates the power for the ignition system. The sensor is the sensor for the ignition system and triggers the powerpack (you missed that out too) to produce pulses that are fed to the ignition coils where they are transformed into the high voltage required for the spark plugs.

Any help?

Big help! Thanks. I know now I was after the wrong part. I saw the wires ripped out of the stator and figured that was why it wouldn't run well. That would only affect battery charging I assume?

yes the bits mentioned in my first paragraph are not fitted to all engines. Generally only those with electric starting or the Sailmaster/Yachtwin versions will have the rectifier but the stator can be fitted to provide AC power for lights.

I guess you have found that you have ignition problems. I had the power pack fail on a very little used 6hp. Just stopped dead! Fortunately I was not far from the mooring and the little engine for the tender got me home. Took it back to the supplier and got it replaced without charge.

A 1987 electric start 9.9 will have 2 charging systems under the flywheel, one for the battery and one for the ignition. if the wires torn out are yellow they run the battery charging system if they are brown and brown with a yellow tracer they are ignition wires. You did not idicate the color of the bad wires

Re: 1987 9.9 electrical questions

Thanks! I do have the sailmaster model. I will disconnect the wires from the stator since the coil is damaged. I will also unhook the regulator so it cant damage the new powerpack when I replace it. If the motor runs better with the new powerpack I may then repair the charging. To me the charging is almost useless since it only charges at full throttle and only 4 amps. My 10 amp charger takes overnight to charge a battery. A nice solar panel would probably do me more good. I guess the charging is for running lights?
Thanks for the help folks, I am glad to be learning about outboards since I don't plan to ever stop boating and god willing I will own a cruising sailboat someday and cruise the bahamas and caribbean for starters. The more I learn the more self sufficient I will be!

Exactly what i found and just what I did although the engine does just still contribute a little bit and with electric starting can be useful but mines a manual start.

Some models with manual starting do have the same or similar stator to provide an AC lighting supply but with a 3 wire output they have to be connected as shown in the instruction manual.
