My tach shows about double the RPMs it should and is the motor is not charging.I think the two are related,can some one confirm that ? Those two things being related , does that lead to one certain part being bad , if so what? Thanks
Tachometer fluctuations and loss of charging voltage usually indicate a failed rectifier/regulator. Failure to address this problem can end up killing the power pack and stator.
The tach gets it's signals from the battery charging coils under the flywheel. These are different coils than the ones that make ignition power. It's common that an erratic tach is an indication of a problem with the rectifier/regulator.
