1987 alpha one gen 1 shift linkage question

Hi I have a question on an alpha one gen 1 outdrive and replacing the water pump in the lower unit and I was cleaning around the shift linkage stub shaft in front of the water pump and I believe I moved it and I'm not sure where it's supposed to be for forward like when I started the disassembly process. Thanks for the help.

turned fully clockwise while turning prop CCW until locked this is fwd gear and dont forget the SS washer on the splined shaft

Okay excellent thank you. I was noticing as I was turning the prop counterclockwise it locked into gear and I also noticed that the vertical shaft coming up from the water pump housing was also turning counterclockwise. So this would be correct?

With not having the water pump impeller installed , Yes
With the water pump installed , No

Ya, because having the pump together it won't turn .
