Hi, my 1987 evinrude 150xp sometimes (but more frequently recently) will make a kind of clicking or gear grinding sound when shifting into reverse and never gets into reverse. forward works just fine. it seems to be an intermittent problem that started a month or so ago. Sometimes is shifts into reverse and works ok, but not always. Lately, it only goes into gear about 20% of the time. The last few times out, I haven't even bothered to try to go in reverse as the sound probably means something is getting damaged:)

I assume that its an adjustment somewhere on the engine-side of the cable, but I'm not sure what I'm looking for or what/how to adjust. oh, and if it matters i have a hotfoot (forward and reverse shifts via the remote) Any tips appreciate.

Tia,
Don

You fear that something is getting damaged? I fear that it is already damaged and the only cure now is a new reverse gear and clutch dog. Too late for adjusting, if that ever was the trouble in the first place.
