I went out on the boat last night and I didn't have reverse and not enough power to get on plane in foward. I had just replaced the seals so I figure I didn't get the sweet spot when putting the lower back on. I pulled it off today to adjust the shift rod and the rod came up with the shifter detent still screwed to it and I have no idea how to remedy this. I've looked at rebuild prices for the lower and I really dont want to fork out 3K on a 30 yeard old motor if I dont have too. If anyone can point me in the right direction or know where a video is that would be great.

What in the world??? Looks to me like you have to completely disassemble the gearcase to get the detent back in.

I'm in Va. Yeah I figured as much. Time to look for another motor. Sucks with what I've put into it and the costs of this repair I should have put a huge down payment on a brand new motor. Oh well money pit wins again

This isn't that hard...I happen to be babysitting the wife tomorrow, she had shoulder surgery. If you would like, I'll grab the manual and talk you through it. Only basic tools required. Socket set, slide hammer with a hook may be necessary (harbor freight has them for 12$), some wrenches and screwdrivers. #3 Phillip's comes to mind, large flat blade, some gear lube, grease, and a little jar of permatex aviation gasket snot.you will need a spline tool or some way to hold the vertical shaft while you loosen the pinion nut.

Yeah I'm no mechanic but I have basic skills. Usually if I take something apart I can get it back. I just haven't taken anything apart from the gears back yet so it will be new to me. I watched a video on disassembling everything and it doesn't look to complicated but then again it's always easier to take a puzzle apart lol. I know I bent the spring trying to put it back the wrong way and I have no Idea where the ball bearing went, it's in there somewhere but those are cheap parts so I ordered new ones. I think my main issue is going to be getting the shift shaft correct because I had to buy a 6" extension kit for this motor ( outer, shift shaft, drive shaft, exhaust, and water tube) and I never took the measurement from the seal to the hole at the top so I would know (plus 6") where to put it back. That's going to be a lot of trial and error I guess.

Turn the vertical shaft clock wise, which way does the prop spin?

but if the shift linkage is not secured you cant shift it anyways so it does not matter...that will all be sorted out upon assembly.
