I just bought a 1987 Evinrude 88 hp. For the most part, it is running great. But the last time I had it out I ran out of gas and I had only been out for about 2 hours. For most of that time I was at half throttle. I think there may be a leak in the gas line but there are no visible signs on the outside. I was also wondering what the proper oil mix is, 40:1 or 50:1. Thanks all.

50 to 1 on the mix. The commonly accepted rule of thumb says you should use about 1 gallon for every 10 HP per hour running at or close to wide open. You don't say how much gas you used in your 2 hours of half throttle.

Although it hasn't happened to me, we have had a rash of gas thefts in my neighborhood lately and you might want to be sure you used all your gas, not one of the neighbor kids in his Civic

Mix is 50:1. Not sure if your getting proper mileage or not because I don't know how much you started with. A good estimate is 10% of the HP per hour at WOT. So your 88hp should be about 9 gal/hour at WOT. It's pretty difficult to measure accurately unless you keep it at a constant throttle all the time. But 9 gal/hr should be about the max usage.
