Coils are bad they are the old black round style.
Do they make these coils anymore or should they
be replaced with the newer style ?????????

Don't know what you mean by "the newer style".
THere is the right one - black, and a different one - blue.
The parts are not interchangeable.

Some people will tell you otherwise, but I have seen it cause more troubles.

The correct coil is available from any Mercury dealer.

The 1987 A and B models use a different coil from the 1987 C model.

What makes you think both are bad? Both don't usually go bad.J

Your buddy has either the A or B model, I have the B model same HP & year, I paid $232 (shipping included)for 2 brand new coils last August. Heres the link http://www.boats.net/parts/detail/merc/M-F380475.html

Good luck
