I have a 1987 force 50 hp motor that purrs like a kitten until you put it in gear. It will rev up and run awesome when not in gear but in gear the top speed is 10 miles per hour. Any one have any ideas on what it might be?

Thanks in advance Alan..

Sounds like the prop/hub has spun.Remove it and mark the hub and re-install.go for a ride and re-check.J

Thanks but the motor will not evan rev up in gear the timing changes with the motor in gear and it will not go faster then 10 miles per hour.

See if each plug is firing. I had one that would purr when sitting at the dock, but put it in gear and it would not rev up....found out it would idle with one of the plugs not firing but would not run out w/o the missing cylinder. Easy to check

Thank you for the answer. My motor will run great in or out of gear when in a water trough at home, but put it in the river or lake and it will not rev up or go above 15 miles per hour.

Sounds like it wants to stay home. Ok just kidding. When you run it at home, is the cowl cover
On or off. Could be an exhaust leak and the motor is starving for air but only if the cover is on. Try it both ways and see what ya get. Let us know.
