Last Weekend on the lake had the boat loaded down and leaving the doc trying to get on plane felt the motor lurch and made a bang noise kinda , we stopped an checked everything thinking I had hit a underwater stump but all was fine so we kept going well it would do every so often under load an kept getting worse an worse untell we just pulled it out of the water. Motor ran fine just sounded like maybe it was slipping a gear or linkage was jumped out of gear or back in? But couldn't tell ,how can I check the lower unit to see if it's that ? There were tiny shavings in the oil wen I stuck something in the filler hole, and no water.

KBH sounds like he already drained the lower?
Your clutch dog went bad.or the gear set went.
You'll need to get a manual of some kind(factory is best).
Or try u-tube?? there are video's out there that cover most anything??

If it is the dog, you can resurface the edges or just flip it around.
But new is always better.

If you change just the dog? you won't need to reshim the unit.

You can resurface the gear set too.
I've seen people use a dremel but a machine shop would probably get better results.

Post a couple pics of the dog and gears, showing the mating edges.
I might have a NEW dog?? Free, you pay shipping.
Post the pics so I can compare and check the damage.
