1987 Four Winns 165 hp oil type ??

Hello I have a 1987 Four Winns 170 Horizon with 165 hp 4cly 3.7 I wanted to know what type of non - mercruser oil I can use in this motor ? can I use shell Rotella 15w 40 ? can't remember if it askes for mercruser 25w 40 or 20w 40 ? but would like to use different oil ? but I want to make sure its safe to use

It will be absolutely safe. No Problems, It's lack of maintenance that will kill 'em. 15-40, 10-40, 30 wt, 40 wt, you won't sieze an engine on any of them.

It's all in how you use it, I wouldn't spin it to 6 grand either being a 20 year old engine.

FWIW... I use straight 40 wt, doesn't matter what brand. I also don't boat in December either.

Thanks does it have to be synthetic oil ? I was thinking on using Shell rotella 15W 40 ?

You'd be fine with that oil. The only issue is if you boat in cold weather, it may be a bit thick. for summer use, it's fine.
