1987 Johnson 120hp - Steady alarm after prop hitting rock

Hello,

This is my first post on this forum. I generally don't participate in any forums, but I have been lurking on iboats forum for a while though. I apologize for the lack of an introductory post.

Recently I purchased a second hand 1987 17' Peterborough Bowrider with a 120hp Johnson V4 (w/ VRO) CJ-120-TLCUR. This is my first boat. I cant' really seem to find any information on this boat or the motor. The boat seems very nice, only slight issue is that the fuel priming bulb doesn't become hard when you pump it, even after 15 minutes of straight pumping (but there seems to be gas in the fuel line right before the carb). And the motor won't cold start unless the fuel tank is more than half full. But once it starts and warms up, restarting it is very easy.

However, my main issue right now is this. On my third boating trip with this boat, I accidentally drove the boat into a shallow region while planing at 25mph, and the prop hit a rock and one of the three blades lost more than half the aluminum, and the two other blades lost chunks of aluminum too. The engine starts back up. We tried to drive back to dock, which is several kms away. However even at low speeds (engine rpm < 1500), the outboard had a noticeable vibration.

Eventually, I heard some intermittent beeps. 2 in total, separated by a few minutes. I ignored it and kept driving. After about 40 minutes more of slow driving, there was a very loud and constant alarm coming from the throttle control box. The engine would still run, but I shut it off in fear of damage. I noticed that the alarm would sound as soon as the key is in the ON position (Before starting engine).

We let it sit for about 30 minutes, and then started the engine fine without the alarm. So my question is, what happened? What were the 2 beeps? And what was the constant alarm? Could the alarm be related to the prop damage? I briefly raised the motor, and spun the prop by hand and did not notice any runout.

TL;DR The props hit a rock and one blade is gone, engine vibrated while driving, two beeps sounded, and then a constant loud alarm sounded. Let sit for 30 minutes and engine seemed fine again. What could be wrong?

Thanks for your help,
Jimmy

Itl vibrate with a out of balance prop. The question will be whether the lower unit or powerhead has taken damage, the props are designed to have some give so hopefully they havent.
About the beeping is your oil level low???????? That would be very dangerous if it is so

The alarm could also be the overheat alarm, possibly you had waterpump damage from crash.

I took a look at the LU today, there doesn't seem to be any external damages (cracks, etc), but I will now check the gear oil for any metal shavings.

So I changed my LU oil today. To my surprise there was very little oil inside the gear case. The capacity for this model is about 700ml, and I am guessing only about 100 ml came out. What little oil came out was black and smelled burnt. There was also a bit of water that came out before the oil. On the magnet there were some metal particles, they are small and kinda like dust rather than shaving.

I'm just surprised that the outboard ran so well with so little oil in the gear case. I would have never guessed that it was running on 100 ml of oil. I'm guessing the previous owner never changed the oil??

I filled the gear case with new oil. What should I do now? Should I examine the oil after a few hours of running and see if oil level dropped, or color changed? Or do I need to get the seals replaced?

Oh and the rather strange (but good) thing is that the overheat alarm never came on again. The water pressure from the tell-tale also seems good just by feeling it with my hands. But I notice that the tell-tale water temperature changes a lot. Idling on the lake it's quite cool, but after planing at 25 to 30 mph for 15 minutes it does get noticeably hot (but still touchable), is this normal?

The lower unit needs to come apart for inspection of all gears and bearings.
