1987 Johnson 88 SPL water pump queston

I was wondering if anybody had any advice on removing the shift rod to drop the lower unit. I've read some people said they removed the bottom carb, others said put the engine in reverse. Any suggestions or advice would be great I'm about to get started and want the get all my ducks in a row before I begin. Thanks a lot!

Follow these steps.-------Look for a hitch pin on the shaft that goes across below the bottom carburetor.------If you find that pin then remove it.-------Remove shift cable at the motor.-------Now push that shaft to the starboard side and turn it.------Shift rod should be released.------There is absolutely no need to remove the bottom carburetor on those models equipped with that hitch pin !!
