I have recently inherited my father-in-laws boat that has a 1987 Johnson 90 Engine on it and I would like to do a complete service on it. Sadly, I do not know exactly what that entails. I know I want to replace the Lower Gear Oil and spark plugs, but didn't know if there was anything else I need to check or replace. First, I would like to know how much Gear Lube is needed for a lower unit. I know how to replace the oil, but I'm not familiar with this motor and don't know exactly how much oil is needed.

Other than spark plugs and Lower Gear Unit Oil, what else should I be inspecting or changing. I have attached 5 photos so if you see something in them that is concerning, please let me know. My goal is to get this boat water ready for next season. First is the motor work, then I will work on the electronics of the boat. That post will be at a later date.

Thank you in advance.

Norman

Mix gas and oil at 50:1 until you verify VRO is actually working.----New water pump impeller.-----Test overheat horn.-----Compression test.----Post your numbers here.-----Takes about 30 ounces of oil.-----So get 40 ounces.-----Fill oil from the bottom till it comes out the top screw ( u-tubers videos )will explain why that is done.

This looks like a motor that is used in salt water. When you refit the lower unit be sure to coat the full length of the bolts with OMC thread sealant or Mercury Perfect seal before you refit them. Hope the bolts come out without too much difficulty.
