Hello I'm having a problem with one of my 470's I have a 87 Thompson with twin 470's
my right motor starts no problem the left one will not start right now, for the last 4 week's I had to move the motor past it high compression then I could turn the key
and it would start. The battery lead from the switch was melted so I replace it.
that didn't help, made shore the batteries totally charged. now I lost. all ground cleaned
and replaced. now what? any help???????

Re: 1987 mercrueser 470 having trouble starting

Sounds like a starter problem. The rather long armatures in 470 starters have a tendency to bend or break and rub up against the field coils, resulting in high draw, and slow turnover. Pull the starter (major pain) and have it checked. If bad consider replacing with a permanent magnet gear reduction unit part # 2-2591-DR2 about 2/3 the size of the original. Good luck.
