Starter is going out on my 1987 Sea Ray Seville Mercruiser 175 V6. I am going to order one this evening if I can figure out exactly which one I need. Never changed a starter before, is there anything I need to know before diving into this? Can anyone give me any tips and or pointers for tackling this job? I appreciate all the help I can get - I will need it. Thank you to everyone in advance.

Get the Hi-Torq one, smaller and lighter, use the correct bolts and bracket, remove the exaust manifold to make access easier

Thanks for the tips. I am a little bit more of a beginner - so the exhaust manifold will probably stay in place as long as I can help it. Hoping I can access it and get it changed out without any issues.

when i'm tackling a job i've never done before. i like to read the factory service manual about how the oem thinks i should do the job. ya might look for your s/m here.
fwiw, i did a job just yesterday in my field of work, not boats. but i'd never worked on the hardware i was getting ready to work on. i sought out the oem for any insight or install instructions. it did help. it gave me a clue as to what i was getting ready to encounter. i do the same for working on my boat. beware. the oem mercruiser service manual seems to have a relevant statement about what your doing in about every sentence. read it carefully. good luck.
