1987 Mercury 175hp voltage regulator question

First of all, thanks to everyone for all your help in the past. ... Have diagnosed several problems without having to ask a question. THIS TIME IS DIFFERENT.

I have a bad voltage regulator. Is it okay to run with the voltage regulator unhooked until I can get a new one purchased?

Second question. I found a new voltage regulator on ebay for $143. Any one know of any cheaper ones?

I thought V6s of that era only came with rectifiers and if you run without it battery will become undercharged.If it has been fitted with a regulator that is faulty i would say yes it can be run without it.Just keep an eye on electro/water level in battery.At WOT unregulated you might peg as high as 17V,so using some accessories or reducing RPMs will pull it back a little.
My V6 has been run for 24 years without a regulator,which requires a strong battery to absorb the unregulated charge.

Thanks for your quick reply. As far as overcharging, I think I have enough accessories to turn on to help with that situation. I was mostly concerned about whether it would hurt my stator and/or rectifier. I did not think it would, but I wanted a second opinion.

If you get a chance can you post pic on where your regulator is mounted.Im thinking of adding one to my V6 1988.
