I just bought a 1987 Ebbtide with 1987 Mercury Black Max 150 XR2 for a good deal. Everything had been babied but it hasn't been ran but once in the last 2 years...Lake tested today and here are the issues...Please help diagnose.
#1 - Engine starts everytime and idles fine, but cuts out when put into reverse or forward. If you put into gear and increase throttle it will take off. After it's warm it will not die but runs rough. This motor seems to enjoy running with throttle. Note...The bulb doesn't get full hard and when it dies...the bulb seems empty.
#2 - When put into reverse there is a repetitive bump like it is backfiring or possible jumping in/out of gear.
#3 - the temperature gauge buzz goes off after running very short while, but it has a good water stream, and the water pump was replace about 2 years ago and only ran once since. If I place motor in neutral I can put full throttle and the temp gauge will cool back down very quickly...Why does it cool down so fast in neutral but heat right back up in gear.
#4 - Steering was extremely stiff and I greased it up, but grease was coming out of the bottom of the housing. Is this normal or should it be contained.
I am sure I need carb kits and possible impeller but just hoping there maybe some fix that will fix several issues. Input needed.
