I recently purchased a 87 bayliner capri with a 5.0 G.M. motor and have had problems with the shifting mechanism and being stiff to shift ;lastnight i unhooked the cable to the outdrive and the shifter moves very freely now.the cable to the outdrive cant hardly be moved with a pair of pliers is this an adjustment or is it cable replacement time the cable that is in it is black!

Looks like its cable replacement time Justin. You can sometimes free them up by soaking them in wd-40 or some other type solvent but its only a short term fix.Sorry.

That cable needs to be replaced. There was a problem with them, and the newer updated cable is red.

Also, on my 1988, the shift shaft bushing and seal that the shift shaft rides through on the lower unit was shot and the shaft was sticking. The bushing is not available separately, you have to get the whole cover as an assembly, it's only about $25.
