Ok, i had the impellar replaced in my motor around March of this year and it already quit pumping water.Surely it should last longer than that.I guess my main ? is what could cause it to fail this soon?

Something badly wrong in there if that happened. It is possible to get a bad impeller though. Check the entire water pump assembly and replace if necessary.

Go talk to who did the work, should last longer than that. Check tele tale hose isn't plugged. I've had bees or something plug that up with like sand/dirt to block flow from pump too.

Checked the tel tail as soon as i noticed it not peeing like normal.also held my finger over the end of tel tail and could feel slight air pressure,is this normal?
I took the hose off of the thermostat housing also and no water is going through.

After i had the impeller replaced it would pee just while cranking over the motor,Ive been noticing over the last week or so that it would not start peeing as soon or as hard as it used to.

I use this boat everyday, sometimes only go about 2 miles round trip and some days might be 20 miles.

Re: 1987 rude

I forgot to mention I also had sea weed logged around the thermostat on mine even with lower unit screen. That blockage will also restrict or stop water flow. Mine was plugged on Port side of motor which actually feeds the other side.

There are 4 bolts that hold the thermostats on engine. Just remove the bolts a pull off and see if the thermostats are plugged. Just clean up if so and reinstall. Check both of them too. When reinstalling you don't need to over tighten the bolts.

I was told you can run (temporarily) without thermostats installed to flush out but I HAVE NOT tried that. I just removed cover cleaned up thermostat and housing( if needed) and replaced. It cost me a service call to find out that is what stopped my water flow after a new impeller was replaced. They said I could do that myself(after I paid for the service).

Probably a good thing to do ever season or more depending on how much sea weed and the like you boat through.

Hope this helps you.

Took lower unit off to inspect the impeller and housing, everything looks good.impeller looks brand new as it should.blew through the tel-tail and could feel and hear air coming through the water pick up tube that runs through the mid section.
