I just bought this older boat and motor and i took it out the other day and when i put the throttle down it goes all the way down and only gets to about 2500 rpm maybe 10 miles an hour. I don't know how to go about tighting it so i can get a tighter fuller throttle.

Thanks

Pull the airbox cover off and see if the throttle plates are fully opening when the throttle is completely down....

we have to first diagnois if it is the cable or the motor problems. 99% it is dirty high speed jets in the carbs.
did you check compression, spark, and test drive the boat before buying it?

the first thing you need to do is order a service manual for your motor, it you are going to try to work on it yourself. http://www.outboardbooks.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=models.main&year=1988&ID=144965

I'm with TD, I don't think it is a throttle problem, sounds like a dirty carbs problem.

Get an OEM manual(not Clymers/Seloc or anything on CD) here at iboats and clean the carbs after you pull the airbox and confirm that the throttle plates are opening all the way.

I wouldn't adjust anything till I got the manual, you are more than likely just going to throw it off if you do, the timing is tied to the throttle linkage so if you adjust one you adjust both and it can be a real pain to get it right again.

Your motor has jets, when they get dirty they don't allow the proper amount of gas to get to the carbs making it run like you say it is, there is nothing to turn or adjust, the jets determine how much gas the motor gets.

And don't run the boat anymore till you get this done, the cylinders that aren't getting gas aren't getting any oil either and it is very hard on the crankshaft to have some cylinders hitting and others not.

I had the compression and carb checked at the marina but when i got it back the throttle had a ton of play in it that is what was making me think it was the throttle cable, but i'll check the carb just to be safe.

Pull the air box off the front of the engine and open the throtle all the way, the butterflies should be flat open or very close.

if they aren't completly open it may well be a throttle cable problem but if it was like that when it came back from the dealer I would take it to them and ask what they did to it.
