1988 115 merc starter won't stay engaged

I have trouble starting my 115 merc. engine, When cranking, the starter seems to stop turning. On some trys it seems to just bump the engine and not even get a full revolution of cranking. Every once in a while it stays engaged long enough to get her going.. Any thoughts or ideas? Just need a good place to start. I've always had I/O's, not very familiar with an outboard.

Check all the connections with the battery, starter and solenoid. Make sure there is no corrosion. The contacts should all be shiny. Maybe your battery is going bad? Possible ignition switch problem?
