Hello everyone,
I have had long-standing leakage problems with my tilt/trim system, so I finally found a used replacement and have installed it. It works just fine. However there has been a change in the movement direction of the system. It is a two wire system. I simply reconnected the wires on the unit to the ends of the old wires; there was a green wire and a blue wire on each pair and I wired them accordingly. The weird thing is that when I used the old system, when I pressed the "up" toggle, the motor would move up, regardless of its position and the same for the "down" toggle; the motor would move down regardless of its position. When it reached full up or full down, it went no further and you had to toggle in the other direction from that point on. Now, when I press the "up" toggle, the motor will go up as far as the trim pushes it and then it will go back down to bottom and THEN come up quickly in tilt mode and stop at full up, pressing "down" causes it to drop quickly to the full down and then it will come back up slowly in trim mode.... What in the world is going on? Have I miss-wired it backwards or is it supposed to do this? My original one certainly did not work like this. Any insight on this is welcomed. It works - but I don't want to keep doing it if it is not supposed to cycle that way. Thanks.

Unfortunately Our resident expert on tilt/trim has passed on. Not knowing the type of pump and trim unit, it is not possible to say if the unit is functioning correctly. HOWEVER: I have never seen a tilt/trim unit function in the manner you describe. It can be a PIA when you trim while driving the boat--hit max trim and the engine drops.

I don't think it is a wiring issue but short of seeing the wiring that is difficult to tell. It could be a problem with relays (if it has them) I would lean more toward an internal valve problem

My two cents. The replacement unit is not working properly or is not of the proper load rating. Have you tried doing a leak down test? Does the unit stay up after you do a full tilt? Or at least stay up when trimmed up? Was the replacement unit identical to the old unit or was it a generic aftermarket replacement? If it's an aftermarket, you'd be better off troubleshooting the original unit for they lasts longer and more reliable. If it is identical unit, then do a leak down test first.
