I did have another topic going. But, it seemed to die out.

I reported it was a 1980 15 hp Johnson when in fact it is a 1988. After watching several youtube videos I decided to order a carb kit and I just took the carb off. There wasn't a gasket between carb and motor.

I took carb off and looked into the main hole to see if it is a carb for a 9.9 or 15. I think it is for the 15, however; there is a big rubber gasket in the main hole. I did not see this on the videos I looked at.

Is this supposed to be in there? I'm getting the kit tomorrow and hope to work on it on Friday. I have not seen the rubber gasket in any kit or video,

Holy Crap!! I just figured out where that grommet goes. THAT grommet was inside the main chamber of the carburetor.

I'm guessing somehow it got sucked in there. It was on the other side of the main flutter valve in the main chamber.

Please excuse my names I use for these parts. I've never opened a carb. before

Oh Wow!!
That'd be a problem! :D

Glad it didn't go any further.. lol

So, I guess it started giving you issues "All of a sudden"??
(Not a pro here, and not familiar with your exact engine.. )

Looks like it got sucked in, and settled between the choke butterfly valve and the throttle butterfly valve in the throttle body of the carb.. At least those are the terms I've always called them.. Maybe not right either though.. lol

(At least looks like choke and throttle from pic.. not sure..)

I once found a bolt in there on a buddy's car when he had issues, back when carbs were still on cars anyway.. haha!
I'm going to venture a guess, and say DON'T put that back in the carb.. (Just like you've already concluded..)

Crazy what can happen huh?

i reinstalled the grommet. It looks like new and it is a very tight fit. Is there really so much of a suction going on that it can pull the grommet through the air intake and into the main chamber of the carb? Or, did the last guy who worked on it somehow didn't know it was in there.

I get the new carb kit tonight.

I'm wondering why there was no gasket between carb and manifold. No gasket and the grommet inside carb. Wow!!
Geez, what else am I gonna find about this carb.

I haven't seen any videos on a 1988 johnson carb, but I did see a video on a 1989 carb. Mine is different from that one.

The schematics I'm looking at of that engines carburetor shows two base gaskets with a spacer between. Although the parts list doesn't show the spacer. Not sure if it was done away with as a engine update or is just no longer available.

I have a 1988 25 HP Evinrude and don't recall seeing anything like that piece on the carb.

This is on a 1988 model 15 hp , a totally different engine than a 25 hp.

Do you have the metal float bowl or the plastoc float bow and black plastic top carb?

I have the metal float bowl. I did find a video on youtube with this particular carb. The other video I was watching turns out to be a 1989 carb which is different from the 1988 carb.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6bzQZn3i7Q

I ordered the kit for the 1989. Oops. But, today I have the 1988 carb kit coming.

WhoooooHoooo!!! I put in new carb kit and fixed the starter pull coil and she started right up and sounds better than she ever has.

Gonna take her for a ride tomorrow.

Still is a mystery of how that air silencer grommet got inside the main carb chamber.

If anybody that reads this is too scared to try to fix these things themselves. I was that same person.
But, with some encouragement from people here and youtube videos I did it.

Thanks for all the responses and help.

The Launch After the Rebuild

Started on 2nd pull, put in forward and it stalled. Started 2nd pull again, forward and stalled. Started first pull and I let it warm up before putting it in forward. Put it in forward and this time it purred through the 1/4 mile of no wake zone. Then the big test - Will it push the boat faster than 4-5 mph. She opened up and ran like a dream. Went two miles and shut it off. Fished a little. Started up first pull and ran great for the next 5 mile run.

Brought her home and put her in garbage can and she started first pull. Ran the gas out of her and celebrated.
