Hello all. I'm new to owning a boat and working on an outboard engine but with your assistance I've changed the impeller and priming bulb on my outboard so that now I'm able to start it without any starting spray without breaking my arm and I've got great water flow now. My problem now is stalling at idle. Every time I push in the choke the engine stalls. I adjusted the idle screw as the operators manual instructs and it didn't help. What steps should I take now? Should I remove and clean the carb? Do I need a carb rebuild kit? Other ideas. Thanks in advance.

What's the model or serial#??
Plugs burning OK.Spark OK? Comp OK?Idle too low?
Check the fuel pump for dirt and bad diaphram.
The air screw might need to be adjusted.
Get a Tiny Tach and hook it up.The idle should be about 800 in gear in the water.
Air screw(after the carbs been cleaned)in till it just touches(gently)then out 1 turn.Start motor in the water and in gear turn it in till it stalls/stumble or coughs. Then out 1/2 turn.

Do a fuel pump rebuild yet? Good compression is very important for the fuel pump to be able to deliver proper amount of fuel. May also need to adjust the carb. air fuel mixture. and float adjustment.

You might have to clean the carb, but as bentle said, the fuel pump needs to be rebuilt. Even if it isn't bad, it's something that needs to be done on these old outboards as ethanol is hard on those old rubber parts. I bet it's hard, cracked, dried out or distorted. If the fuel pump doesn't fix it, rebuild the carb. You might get away with just cleaning out the carb and not need a kit, I did that on my OB and lucked out that the gaskets still sealed, though it's best practice to use new gaskets....

Oh yeah, don't use starting spray if you want the outboard to last very long. Starting spray doesn't have any oil in it.....

Thanks all. You've given me plenty of ideas to get started. I think it will be a week or two before I'm able to get to some of these items but once I do I will give you some updates to let you know how I do. Thanks for all the advice. Also, my serial number is 225.581500.
