my father and i are having trouble getting this boat to run . a year ago he changed the sparkplugs to platinums and got new wires and cap and rotor and all the normal tuneup stuff. before this it ran rough , now it wont even start . it turns over and every once in a while it will backfire but thats about it. I think he crossed the wires so i will be fixing that tomorrow( i think thats why its backfiring . but i wondered if our choice of platinum plugs is a bad one . Im used to working on high energy spark systems on newer cars and am not very versed in distributor ignitions . does the stock ignition system even have enough power or the right resistance to use platinum plugs or should we just get some plain ole champion coppers ?

also what is a good mid range prop for this boat? size and pitch . we would like to ski some and have a little top end to get to the fishing spots early.
I cant seem to find all the answers in need on the net , so any insight will be much appreciated .

Thanks in advance!

I don't think the plugs are your problem. Check the firing order again and re-run those plug wires. That would be the first thing I'd do. When you're done with that, make sure your choke is working and you smell some gas at the carb- -don't forget to put the flame arrestor back on before you turn her over.

Platinum and Iridium spark plugs usually take less voltage for the spark to jump the gap at the electrode.

Howdy,

Wait until you get the engine running correctly...

Then get a known tachometer and a GPS.

Prop the boat for maximum recommended RPM at WOT ("wide-open-throttle")

Use a "prop slip" calculator to get in the in the "ballpark". Use around 12-15% slip.

Nothing like a Liberator!!

Rick
