I am replacing the water pump in the lower unit. I pulled the lower unit off, and pulled the water pump housing off. Now when I removed the plate, I must have accidently pulled up the driveshaft and it popped out. Can it be placed back in just like it came out? Or do I have to pull it apart and reset the pinion gear into the driveshaft gear?

You should be able to slide it back in, might have to rotate it to align the splines.

Yeah, I pushed it back in and kind of spun it gently and it seems to sit in there just fine and when I put the housing back together, it obviously holds it down. I just want to make sure before I put it all back together that something bad isn't going to happen in there.

Oh yeah, you bet. That's a tricky little plastic piece... Kind of a goofy design if you ask me.

Just think, they paid someone big bucks to design that style key. Personally I never had a problem with the old style, but without changing something they couldn't charge more for parts.

Ha, you are absolutely right. It was nice when the key was fixed to the driveshaft and spun to fit into the impeller. Wish they wouldn't have changed it.

Plastic is cheaper than stainless steel. Don't forget about the "bean counters"

Just an update. Put the new water pump kit in. Slid the driveshaft back into place, and bolted it all up. Reattached the lower unit. Fired it up and the water pump works perfectly, and everything works as supposed to. No problems.

Re: 1988 25 hp Evinrude Lower Unit Question??? Driveshaft

My model is a E25EEDM commercial 25Hp elec. start. The lower end had a coupler in the intake strainer - seems unlike other posts on getting the lower end off this engine. Now i have the water pump housing open, but see no way to brass nut of coupler mentioned above through housing top. Does anyone know how to get shifter rod out of water pump housing on the above model
