1988 3.0 merc no fire

i have looked at alot of forms and still cant find out whats going on. I have 12 volts on bouth +and - side of coil. but i have no spark i have weak spark on coil wire and i have spark on points but i can hold the coil wire and it dont schock hard. i am a auto teck but not on boats i guess just dont know what els to do i have unhocked the tack still didnt helpi have traced all the wies and no brks no rust or anythine els on them im at a stand still on this one thanks JIm my numbers are oc352577 on motor and drive unit is ob934407 hope this helps with boat new to this

Did you REPLACE the points and condenser and do a full tune up? If not, start there.

yes points plugs cap roater wires coil condencer but the thing thats got me messed up is i have power on bouth sides of coil when its in the run position on the key switch is that right? thanks for any help that i get thanks JIM

With a meter, check to make sure the points are not shorted. With a meter, and points open, on one side, where the wire goes to the coil, it should read open to ground, (no reading), the other side should show little resistance to ground. Also try it with the condenser disconnected (testing only). Sometimes they can short and ground it out. Sounds like something isn't right in there.

update it runs now have to take it out and make sure it goes thanks for all the help forms where great also just needed more info thanks again jim
