1988 3.7 liter Mercruiser not charging

I have a 3.7 liter Mercruiser that is not charging. I replaced the voltage regulator Part Number 99502A13 in 2005. Should I get more than 5 years out of this part? Could there be another area I should be looking at? The battery is new & I have had to replace the battery every year for the last 3 years.
