I have a chance to buy a 1988 40 hp Mariner outboard motor. Guy says it starts well but gets hot. I asked if it was pumping water and he said no. I suspect a water pump if the line isn't plugged with dirt or a mud dobber got in there. Is there anything I SHOULD Know about this motor before I buy it. He is asking $400. plus a 16 ft boat that needs work and a trailer. Is this a good motor and deal? Thanks

Bring a compression tester and see what it looks like on the gauge. That would be the first thing I'd do. Of course I learned that AFTER I already bought my 16' starcraft with 1996 40hp mariner magnum on it. That said, my compression is fine, so no harm no foul.

I would be leery of it. The Owner Knows there is a Problem, so he is selling it to reduce his losses...

There is a problem on these motors where the lower unit can become extremely difficult to remove. Do some searches online and you’ll see.. I just went through it myself on my 45hp Mariner. Used wedges and soaked shaft in penetrating oil.... takes some time. It is possible this is why the owner has neglected to replace the water pump.

I would take a look at the lower unit and see if it appears to have been attempted to be removed. Again, I believe you will be able to do so, however it can be a tough job if the driveshaft is really stuck in there.
