Motor starts when solenoid is jumped. Power at brown wire to solenoid from harness.

If you are saying the brown wire at start relay is hot when turning the key to start but the starter is not engaging and relay will not pick up, then I would think the relay is bad or the ground to it is bad

I thought the same . Ordered and replaced relay, checked for good ground, still will not start with key. Starts and runs fine when solenoid/relay is jumped. Am I missing another relay or switch?? Thanks for the response Captain.Thinking it may be neutral safety or ignition switch but doesn't make sense when the brown lead to relay is only energized when key is turned to start position??

Maybe corrosion has set in on wire, connection, or switch allowing some voltage through but not enough amps to energize the relay

Good thought. Will try again this weekend with jumper leads and see what happens. Thanks again.

Re: 1988 40etlj will not start with key switch.

Just a note to 99yam40. We were right it was the solenoid. In my haste to swap it out the one mounting screw goes through what I think might be the rectifier which is made of rubber. The metal sleeve/insert dropped out on disassembly which prvented the new solenoid from grounding properly. Finally got a day off and noticed the sleeve (lucky) sitting loose in base of housing, reinserted and motor starts fine. Thanks for your help.
