I'm brand new to the world of boating and especially outboards. I picked up a boat on a trailer with a motor that wasn't running for a good price and quickly discovered it was just the fuel pump unplugged that stopped it from running. Anyways I can get it to fire up and running at a nice idle but after talking with some more engine savvy people I have been advised to change the gear oil and water pump.
I have the water pump kit already and after watching a few videos online I'm up for the challenge. What I can't find is how much and what type of gear oil to use. I bought the pump and I know to fill from the bottom drain up to the vent.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Just ask for it at your local car parts shop or marine dealer. My local car parts place sells it for about $8 for 500ml
Not sure how much you need on that motor but my 1982 60hp takes about 400ml from memory.
Outboard gear oil is basically the same as car gear oil but it has very good additives in case of water penetration so dont chuck in car gear oil.
When you drain it have a look at the colour of the oil, if its milky it indicates that water has got in and you will then have to fix a few of the seals, but luckily you are taking it off to do the waterpump anyway

The oil you need is an outboard engine gear oil. Usually EP 80w/90 to GL5 spec but as said above with extra additives to guard against the effects of water ingress

E.g. http://www.walmart.com/ip/LUBE-GEAR-...IT-QT/37287926

It is recommended that you renew the seals on the drain and level plugs.Usually these are flat hard plastic (Nylon ???) washers, however the parts lists say O rings for this model. You should use the correct type as the plugs differ slightly
