Hello,<br />I have a 1988 70 hp merc. It ran great all season, but the other day, I couldn't keep it going. It would only run in starting position at a high idle, as soon as I drop it down to idle, it would stall right away. I pulled the boat out and checked the motor. The middle spark plug had burnt oil, and there was oil in the air cleaner cover, I guess coming from the carbs, but not sure. Other 2 plugs looked alright, but I changed all 3 and sprayed carb cleaner in the carbs. I always have fresh gas. Any ideas of what could be causing it to die out, except for high idle, or should I bring it to a pro. Thanks in advance. Frank

I don't have much confidence in spray carb cleaners. I take them apart, soak them in solvent, and put them back together. While they are off take take a look at the reeds. might be nothing or might be one didn't close completely and blew mixture in the air silencer
