I have been looking for a used outboard for my boat and have used this site many times when dealing with trying to choose an engine.

I have found a yamaha 70 in good condition, clean bill of health from local marina, recent carb clean waterpump change. Only thing is the tilt/trim does not work and was told it is leaking fluid. I know the yamahas from this era (1988) have problems with their tilt and trim and was thinking it might be better to purchase one of those universal tilt/trim assemblys from boaterworld.com. I think the company is CMC and they go for about $450 but probably could get one for less used. Would this be a less costly alternative than trying to repair the broken system that would come with the engine?

I found yamaha tilt motors for about $250 and don't think it would be difficult to swap so maybe that is the path I should take? All the guy said I would probably need is new seals but i'm thinking worse case scenario and the whole thing is shot.

Re: 1988 70hp Yamaha tilt/trim leaking

I just had a new aftermarket tilt/trim motor put on my 94 90hp Yamaha. The transom bracket had to be separated, because you can not get the motor unbolted from the assembly otherwise. The steering tube nut would not turn. My mechanic had to heat it to get it off. The motor was about $250 or slightly less, but the whole deal set me back $600. To have him rebuild the whole unit would cost me about $1100, so if there is really an entire universal assembly available for around $450, that sounds interesting. Good luck .
