1st take your fuel tank cap off just as a precaution to make sure the tank is getting enough vent to allow fuel to get pushed through the motor... Then if that doesnt work and you did infact replace the fuel pump diaphram get the carbs rebuilt and cleaned.. while the carbs are off the engine remove the reed valve plate and check for broken reed valves.

Could be a spark problem. Dirty carbs or broken reeds. First and cheapest step would be to get a cheap spark tester and make sure you have spark on all cyls.

I dont have a spark tester and did it the old way I pulled the top plug wire and the motor dog i then pulled the middle plug wire and the motor luged i the pulled the bottom plug wire and the motor stayed the same. my question is that could it be the coil?

Happy Thanksgiving guys
So far this is what i did I switch the coils move the bottom coil to the top and moved the top to the bottom Still no spark at the Bottom plug. So it is not the coil right? what else do I need to do.

If your system uses the two ignition boxes, switch the two boxes then recheck spark on all cyls.

If the dead cyl moves then one side of that box is bad.

Re: 1988 85 force no power

Just swap the wires.

Notice that each box has the capability to fire two cyl's but the one box is only using one side.

Once you swap the connections and retest for spark, if the 'no spark' moves to one of the upper cyl's then you know that the one side of that box is bad.

You can reverse the pins in the wire connections for the 'single' box and run #3 off the other 'side'.

If still no fire on #3 then you need to continue testing the stator and trigger.

What I meant was to switch the wires from the stator and trigger, between the two boxes.

I don't remember if your model has the socket connectors or the terminal strip for all the stator, trigger, and coil wires.

If it is the strip then write down (draw a map) every wire, color, position, etc., so you can be sure to put everything back once finished testing.

Then retest for spark.

You do not need to start the motor.

Search the Merc outboard forums for Joe Reeves post on building your own (DIY) spark tester, using a block of wood and some nails.

Rig jumper wires from the plug wires to the tester. remove the spark plugs, it makes it easier on the starter and battery to crank the motor. observe the spark.
