I recently purchased a 1988 9.9 Mercury and cannot shut it off without choking it.

The kill switch and the on/off switch was disconnected and i'm not quite sure where to hook them back up. It seems the only place to hook them back up is to a plastic mount that has a yellow and a grey wire screwed in two different holes. Both wires come from the magneto to that plastic mount.
I screwed the kill switch wires into each hole, vice versa, etc... and nothing happened. I took apart the on/off switch when it was running and recieved a mild shock so there is power getting there. I also put a screwdriver across both contacts inside the switch and nothing happened.

I'm almost sure the plastic mount is where the wires go since that is as far as they reach. I'm not sure which wire (yellow or grey) to hook them up to or why the outboard didn't shut off when I touched both contacts in the switch with the screwdriver.

I would be happy if I could just get the on/off switch working.

Any ideas???

The 2 kill switches have seperate ground wires (black) that go to engine grounds they each have a black/yellow wire that hook them together and then continues to the switch box and hooks to the black/yellow terminal. If you continue arcing wires you won't have to worry about stoping it, as the engine it won't run at all.
