Just pulled my prop to check seals and when I put it back on, it just doesn't seem to go on far enough. Everything is in the correct order that it was when I took it off. What is the torque setting(if there is one) for the prop nut? When I first removed it, it didn't want to budge. I sprayed it with penetrating oil and let it sit for a while. There was a small gap between prop and housing. I stuck a screwdriver and pried on it gently and it slipped right off. Now with it back together, the gap is bigger between the prop and the housing. When you are tightening the nut, is it supposed to seat the tapered washer that goes against the seal? Thanks

Maybe the thrust washer is on wrong.---Taper goes to the taper.

If you have the nylon washer under the prop nut the torque is 10-12 ft-lbs.

I tighten em as tight as I can by hand, and still get the cotter pin through. Then recheck after a few hours.

After getting a closer look, I guess there is no way that the thrust washer goes up against the seal. The shaft is cut smaller where the splines are and then tapers up to where the seal is. Got it back on and torqued it like you said, Boobie. Thanks, guys.

Re the extra gap perhaps you moved the prop on the rubber hub when you pried on it?
You might now get exhaust outside the prop.

Hey Fed, Are you saying that I might get exhaust out through that gap instead of through the prop? I was looking at that hub to see if it moved but it didn't look like it. This is my first boat so I am pretty new to outboards and their maintenance.

I only mentioned it because you said the gap was now bigger, there has to be a reason.

I don't know boobie he didn't say his gap got better.

So is the gap back to where it was before you played with it moonman?

Good call boobie your crystal ball also reads between the lines, I have to say I didn't take post #5 as saying moonman swapped the thrust washer front to back.

Let me clarify something. I did not have the thrust washer on backwards. Although it did not look like the hub had moved, I am thinking that it had to have moved a little because when I put it back together, the washer under the nut would not fit on the splines. I tapped on the hub with a piece of pipe about the same size and it pushed it back enough so that the splines in the washer fit on the splines on the shaft. Sorry for the lack of info.
