1988 90hp Tach Install Question

Hi all,

This sure is a great forum, I've been lurking and reading for a little while.

I just bought a 1988 Johnson 90 hp on a 17' aluminum springbok fishing boat. I've been out about five times and the unit works very well. I have two questions.

1. There is no tach now and i would like to install one. There is a three pole plug just under the key on the side mounted control, but no wires.

do I need to buy a wire harness along with the tach and does that harness just plug into that receiver on the control?

2. The motor starts great and runs well at almost all throttle positions except during launch out of the hole. When I'm starting off from idle at about 1/4 throttle it's real rough, as a push through to 1/2 and beyond and as the motor winds up it smooths out. VRO has been removed and I mix the gas.

It starts immediately and runs well all day as we move around the lake. The only irritant is that roughness during launch.

any ideas?

Re: 1988 90hp Tach Install Question

With regards to the tachometer install, I asked this same question about a month ago regarding my 1990 (I assume it's similar to yours). Here is the thread. Seems it's not too difficult, and in the spring I intend on doing the same:

Which prop do you have on there?

If you get the service manual,
www.outboardbooks.com
then you can try link and sync.

If the ignition advance isn't in sync with the throttle advance then it will bog.
the proper setup proceedure is in the manual. Ignition advances before fuel.

Re: 1988 90hp Tach Install Question

Excellent, Thanks guys. Two questions and two great answers.

The tach looks real easy so I will be tackling that right away. I looked at the prop but I forget the number. I know I need the tack to make adjustments with the prop so I'm getting that done first, then try to size the prop.

The manual has been ordered and is on the way. Thanks both for pointing me in the right direction, really appreciated.

Re: 1988 90hp Tach Install Question

Jonesg;

I just received my shop manual, it's a manufactures manual from searayman13. I'm really glad I got the real manual, the pictures are clear as can be for black and white.

I looked at ignition and fuel sections but I don't see link and sync. Could it be called something else?

Ok, I found it. Synchronization and linkage Adjustment.

Thanks again
