Hello all, this is my first post on this site. This site seems to have some really good info. Hopefully you guys can help me.

I recently aquired a 1988 Arrowglass Carisma 210. The engine was blown when I got the boat but it was a 5.7 liter Mercruiser engine. I am having a rebuilt Chevy 350 put in the boat. The engine is supposed to be about 300hp.The cam is an upgrade from stock and other work has been done to the engine to "pep it up". My machanic is not a boat machanic. And is not familiar with the proformance of the outdrive.

The outdrive is a Mercruiser Alpha One. I would guess stock. I have tried to find specs on the outdrive with very little luck. My machanics concern is in over powering the outdrive with the "built motor" and damaging the outdrive. Should this be a concern???

- What RPM should the engine run at cruising speed?
- Max torgue?
- Max horse power?
- ratio?

In summation, can I tear up an Alpha One outdrive with a 300hp Chevy 350 engine?? If so what should I avoid??

Merc did have the 330hp BB behind a Alpha with 1.32 gearing. It all depends on how FAST your right hand is. RPM? 4800-4900 max. Hi hp is better off with a Bravo

Bravo?? You mean I should have a different outdrive?

We are not trying to build a hot rod of a boat. It is way to big for that!More so the engine was available before I got the boat. And the boat came with busted engine.

Trying this: Cheap boat(blown motor)+Cheap motor(almost free)= good deal.

From this point just want a boat and need to make sure I do not blow up anything else. I can not find much info on the outdrive.

Thanks Bt Doctur

???? I spoke to real "BOAT MECHANIC" today and he told me!!!- "There is no way you can put a car engine in a boat???????????.

Because of the RPMs.I tried to explain to the mechanic that my mechanic told me that the cam was faster in my new motor. He was concerned about running to fast for the outdrive.

Can any one give me some insight? I think my guy said the cam was a 218??

Ayuh,.... It's Always of concern.....

218 is alittle Tall for a boat motor.... Lot's of Info missin' to say...

300hp is about Tops for an Alpha,...
4800/ 5000rpms,...
1.50:1...

Re: 1988 Arrowglass Carisma 210

I got the boat back!:). The boat runs pretty good. I am running about 32mph with RPMs about the same at WOT. I have maybe 4inches of adjustment in the acceleration handle that does not add any more RPMs.

From what I understand I should be running in the low 4000s RPMs with an Alpha one outdrive. With that said I need to increase RPMs 800-1000 RPMs.

With the engine in neutral I can easily obtain 4500-5000RPMs with more to go by manually accelerating the carburetor.

Should I try to adjust carburetor linkages or the prop or both?

Thanks for any feedback
