I just bought a 1988 bayliner bass trophy with a 125 force motor. It ran good in the driveway with the muffs on went into gear both forward and reverse just fine. Took it to the lake put it into the water and it would die as soon as I tried to put it into gear. finally got it started and to go and it ran great!!! Planed out really well and sounded and felt strong. However everytime I stoppped it would die several times before getting it going.. ANY help would be great... Thanks Ron:redface:

Welcome to iboats.

When ran in the driveway, it had no back-pressure on the exhaust, and there was no load on the engine.

It could be a simple adjustment, or something much worse.

Start with a compression check on all cylinders, along with a spark check on each plug.

Examine sparkplugs.

If those are ok, check idle speed in water, in and out of gear.

If that is ok, rebuild the carbs, and clean the fuel recirculation system.

ANY TIME a Force engine has a starting or stalling problem, the FIRST thing to do is clean or change the sparkplugs. These surface gap plugs foul really easily and that is the first symptom. After cleaning or changing them, check the idle speed in forward gear in the water. It should be 700-750. About 1000 in neutral but the critical one is in forward in the water.

Once the engine is running above about 1000 RPM in gear, the ignition system is producing its maximum power spark and even fouled plugs will fire reliably. That it why it will run really well if you can get it in gear without stalling.

I used to have the same problem and even tried increasing the idle RPM higher than 1000 RPM in idle just to keep it from stalling but it still does not to mention the slapping when placed in gear. But after replacing all spark plugs and making sure the idle is set properly as mentioned above, the culprit was a leaking idle exhaust boot. The boot is worn out so bad and leaks exhaust into the leg which eventually gets cycled back into the carbs thus depriving the unit of combustion air, when engine is in the water. It ran fine on muffs because the exhaust is clear and the idle exhaust relief is basically not in used.

Thanks for all the advise! I searched all over for answers and this is the only place I have found any.. I have done all the above mentioned fix's with the exception of the exaust boot.. Where would that be located? I did see a rubber boot just down from the top of the motor on the back side.. Is that the exaust boot?
Again thanks everyone. Can't wait to put it back in the water and see if that took care of the problem.

I have a dinghy with a 15hp evenrude. It always ran fine except would die at idle. At the time, i only used it once or twice a year. This summer, i partnered on a 35 footer and we used the dinghy as a tender. After several weeks, i noticed the motor was idling perfectly. I assume more frequent use cleaned out the carb.

Just something to think about.

You must pay attention to the advice given if the results are important. The idle speed and plugs aw nevermind. Yes, that's the exhaust boot, accordian looking.
