:(
Hello everybody.

For about the last 4 months we having been dealing with a problem, which the boat mechanics at our local boat shop can't even seem to fix. It has been in the shop 4 times for a speed issue. They are getting tried of seeing us (LOL).

The boat will not go faster then 5 mph (if that). They have replaced several things in the engine; they have also replaced the handle. Nothing seems to work.

The boat seems to go faster backwards then it does when we have it going forward.
We lifted the motor out of the water a bit, while we were doing a test run after we got the boat back, and the prop turns slowly, but when we but the boat in reverse the prop seems to being turning very fast with no problems.

Changed the prop out for a better one = no help
Boat = 1989 Bayliner
Motor = Force 125 HP outboard

Is there anything that I can look for or suggest to the mechanics?

Thanks for your time
Joey B.

Welcome Joey B,

Could you tell us a couple of things like: The compression readings on all four cylinders? What kind of rpm's are you getting at idle, and at wide open throttle WOT? What things did the mech replace?

I have a 1988 Bayliner with a Force 125HP O/B. I idle at 800 to 1000 RPM's, and get 5000 RPM's WOT. Runs about 41 to 42 MPH with a 17" pitch prop, a 1/2 tank gas and just me in the boat.

There are allot of very good and experienced people on this site, we'll see if we can get you back on the water again.

Kevin

you need to get some model airplane paint..White or silver will show-up better.
Paint a marker-thick line from the prop shaft, across the hub of the prop, out to one of the blades. Let Dry. Go for a shakdown, and see if the paint line broke, and your mark is no longer one continuous line. This would indicate a spun out hub.

If you can get full RPM,but boat don't motivate (like a slipping clutch, or automatic transission low on fluid), it's a "spun out hub". If you are skiing,or like to do hole shots, these props spin out extremely easy.
If you cannot get full RPM, you may be under powered. Many Bayliner Capri hulls came standard with the Force 50HP (i don't know what you have), but if this is your setup, and you have a load of two adults and one dog, it will take 5 minutes to plane-out,even in the best of trim. Top speed with one average wieght pilot, you will be lucky to get 30MPH.In which case, you may want to look into a larger motor with more HP.
