Hello, need to change a shift cone in a 1988 bravo 1 drive. It starts to slip in forward when it is getting onto plane but can throttle around it then don't have issues once on plane. Bought a replacement quicksilver cone for a bravo 1,2,3 and when I went to replace it, it was 1/8" shorter than what was in the out drive. It was short enough that while the out drive was off I could not get it to engage the drive shaft. I flipped the old one and put it back in and have it running. Any suggestions on this issue? Different part number or is there a way to shim these to get proper engagement? I attached a picture of the 2 shift cones as well. Any help is appreciated.

The original cone clutch in your drive is NLA from mercury. No doubt you've received the newer style

Unfortunately that clutch will not work with the original gearset and drivshaft in your housing. You have to order a complete new gearset, driveshaft, bearings, thrust washers and shim/races. It will require an oem manual and special tools to rebuild it

Thought I've read about those clutches being sanded to get some more life? Can it be flipped?

Find a machine shop that has an understanding of " fine machinery" .----The may be able to repair / refinish / make a new piece.
